South Georgia

Often described as Galápagos of the Southern Ocean, it is the place with most seabirds and and marine mammals on earth.

Capturing any picture without a King Penguin in it is quite a challenge, as the planet's largest colonies are located here – some with over 500.000 individuals. Yet, other penguin species are also present.

In the rare case of not finding a penguin in South Georgia, other wildlife shows up – seals ranging from feisty Antarctic fur seals to resting Elephant seals. A Leopard seal won't miss that party either.

Besides otherworldly wildlife encounters, South Georgia also has astonishing landscapes featuring glaciers and rough terrain. Unfortunately, the dark history of the island is all too present as well.

South Georgia is an iceberg graveyard. Massive, tabular icebergs from the Weddell Sea often end up here. If you're lucky, you might just spot the biggest iceberg in the world: in 2025, this was A23a.
